I stepped to the edge of that one story balcony. I was about to do something completely stupid and risky. It was as if I were as crazy as those jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge, except in my own backyard, and about a thousand times less dangerous... I had my back turned toward the trees and my eyes shut tight. I didn’t know what I was so afraid of considering there just happened to be a trampoline right below me. Maybe the sudden hit to the bouncy surface may sting like a belly flop, but that really is the worst fate.
I peeked back down to the trampoline, hesitantly. I wasn’t the smartest person to think that I would land on such a small trampoline if I weren’t successful. So as if the trampoline read my mind, it grew in size. My anxious heart began to beat and I wrapped my arms around myself tipping backwards off the railing knowing that everything was going to be fine. Because, at that moment, I KNEW that I was dreaming. And at that moment, I began to fly.
Flying is that essence of freedom when you drift, weightlessly through the air, while the wind blows through your hair and you lay back with your hands behind your head because you know you’re pretty cool. Then as you begin to become a little more than a novice, you start to move your arms in the attempt to direct yourself to where you want to go. And it’s only because you are dreaming lucidly that you’re flying.
So I think I may have been a bit confusing and almost invading in some people’s personal comfort when I talk about flying in dreams. So those who are uncomfortable, don’t worry, it happens to a lot of people and it’s not something to feel self-conscious about. Your absolutely fine, illness wise. However half of the people who come across this post can relate to what I am talking about and half of the people are thinking I’ve gone bonkers. However, I have wikiHow on my side, so basically, I win.
Apparently, according to wikiHow, there is a specific method to flying in your dreams. Don’t ask me how they’ve figured it out, or if the authors who created the page are specialized dream flyers, but this is the essence of what I got out of the how-to guide I found.
What you need is a lucid dream, meaning a dream where you are aware that you’re dreaming. Some who have adopted this “culture” have claimed to be “specialized in lucidity”. Another one of the authors also wrote it crucial to have a quote: Dream Interpretation Manual. How do you obtain this? I’m not sure. But, I guess if somebody has it in the world, you must be able to get it somewhere. Maybe.
Step One: Think that you’re dreaming and understand that you are dreaming.
Step Two: Think of a story that involves flying. (This should be a fun and creative process!)
Step Three: Include posters in your environment that resemble flying objects, flying people, and all that jazz.
Step Four: Have fun flying!
Now wikiHow isn’t that mean, they don’t give steps without tips. That would just be insane like complicated cooking instructions, without the microwave option. So as I read these tips, it shows how to recognize you’re dreaming. Some ways are:
A. By looking at the face of a clock multiple times, it will look different each time and numbers may be weird characters
B. Also by looking at a mirror in a dream you will see your face very distorted
These are all the “simple” ways to know you’re dreaming, because, obviously mirrors and clocks always happen to be in every dream.
You know how in extremely dangerous and disastrous situations, a genius guy would always inform viewers not to try this at home? Well it is suggested that you do try flying in your dreams at home, just in case your dream confuses your body and you begin to walk around pretending to fly and jump off high sky scrapers. No big deal. I guess it would be better to fly at home than in the middle of history class where everyone can watch you fall off the teacher’s desk or zoom unconsciously around the room, just saying.
So there’s a brief tutorial of flying in your dreams, if you don’t get it the first time, don’t sweat it. There are “specialists” in lucid dreams who you can talk to and maybe get some lessons on how to fly in your dreams…
Or you can just practice on your own. But if you’re like me, just let it come naturally, I usually like a surprise when I’m about to be eaten by a monster and suddenly I can fly away. It’s kind of nice.
